Description
Mammoth Red Clover, also known as single-cut clover, is a versatile plant species that is great for rehabilitating poor soils. It thrives in many different growing conditions, such as high or low pH and heavy or coarse soils, and is very cold-hardy. This makes it a top choice when looking for a species that can handle tough environments.
It is often planted with other cover crop species to help improve fertility. A healthy stand of Red Clover can fix up to 110 lbs of nitrogen per acre (3 lbs/1000 sq. ft). Deep taproots also allow the plants to access nutrients lower down in the soil profile and slowly release them when the leaves and roots decompose.
Mammoth Red Clover attracts many beneficial insects, provides flowers for pollinators and supports microbial life in the soil. The thick roots create soil-penetrating channels, allowing better internal drainage.
Once established, Red Clover is a good weed suppressor. It can self-seed in the 2nd year if left alone and can be mowed 1 to 2 times per season.
When used as a cover crop, it can be planted as a winter annual, biannual or short-lived perennial. It is hardy to zone 3.
