Description
Also known as German Porcelain, this robust, hardneck variety came to North America with German immigrants over a hundred years ago. It is known for its hardiness, huge bulb size and performs extremely well in colder climates and a wide range of soil conditions.
German White grows an impressive plant with dark green leaves that can produce massive bulbs with huge cloves. It is a very popular variety in the North Eastern the North America.
The flavour is sweet and consistent with the Porcelain family. Ranges in colour from white to slightly purple, depending on the soil and growing conditions. Bulbs are uniform with large cloves (average 5 to 6 cloves/bulb) and can be stored for up to 6 months.
Each pound typically has 30 to 40 cloves per pound and can plant 15-20 feet of row. Each successfully grown clove will produce one full bulb and should yield 5 times what was planted.
Zones 3 to 8 - Hardneck varieties including German White require 4 to 6 weeks of temperatures below 45 degrees F in order to develop bulbs properly. For regions where winter temperatures stay too warm, a cold treatment (refrigeration) of 3 to 6 weeks for mild regions and 8+ weeks for tropical climates.
