Description

One of our farm's absolute favorites and top picks! A great all-around variety and a must-have for every garlic patch.

Spanish Roja is a well-known heirloom that was brought to the Portland, Oregon area in the late 1800s. It is one of the most beautiful varieties available and does very well in cold winter regions. Bulb wrappers range from pink to deep purple, depending on local growing conditions.

Spanish Roja is consistently a top winner in taste tests and has a deep, rich, complex flavour with a full-bodied character.

Scapes should be removed to ensure good bulb formation. Grows well on a wide range of soils and can tolerate excess moisture better than other Rocambole varieties.

Produces large bulbs that have 8 to 10 cloves. Stores for 6 to 8 months.

Each pound typically has 60 to 80 cloves per pound and can plant 30-40 feet of row. Each successfully grown clove will produce one full bulb and should yield 5 times what was planted.

Zones 3 to 8 - Hardneck varieties including Spanish Roja require 4 to 6 weeks of temperatures below 45 degrees F in order to develop bulbs properly. For regions where winter temperatures stay too warm, a cold treatment (refrigeration) of 3 to 6 weeks for mild regions and 8+ weeks for tropical climates.
