Description
Winter Peas are a hardy cool-season legume widely used across the United States as a fertility-boosting cover crop. The plants, flowers, and seeds are also edible and commonly used in salads, cooking, and soups.
Although Winter Peas can be planted throughout most of the season, they are prized for their cold tolerance and ability to handle wet soil conditions. They establish quickly in cool soils, allowing them to be planted during times of the season when other cover crops struggle. This means they are often planted in very early spring or in the fall, where they grow late into the season.
In milder zone 6 or warmer regions (-22°C), they can often survive the entire winter. Planting with a nurse crop, such as a cereal, along with good early snow cover, helps winter survival and protects them from harsh winds. The plants go dormant when temperatures drop below freezing and resume growth in spring.
Winter Peas germinate quickly and can grow lots of biomass in a very short amount of time. Their fibrous roots enhance soil tilth and add organic matter.
Under good growing conditions, the plants can produce up to 120 lbs of Nitrogen per acre. Much of this fertility is released as the plant material decomposes, helping to feed the next crop.
Winter Peas can be planted as an individual crop, but it is most often planted as a mix with other cover crops, such as cereals like Rye in fall and Oats or Barley in spring.
