Description

As the name suggests, this Artichoke softneck variety originates from the mountains of Transylvania in Central Romania.

Of all the softneck varieties we have grown on our farm, Transylvanian grows the largest bulbs and is the most productive. It is cold-hardy and suitable for Northern regions, as well as more mild Southern regions.

Transylvanian does not form scapes, so it is less work to grow than hardneck varieties. Tops can be easily braided for storage or selling, making them popular with gardeners who like to hang them in their kitchens and market growers who sell directly to customers.

Transylvanian has a pleasant, mild-tasting flavour with a hint of heat when eaten raw. Bulbs have 8 to 12 good-sized cloves.

When exposed to very cold winters or when grown under stressful conditions such as drought, some plants may form bulbils in the stem. However, these do not need to be removed for good bulb size, and they do not affect the quality of the bulbs.

Transylvanian plants are generally shorter than hardneck varieties as well as a lighter, more yellow colouring. Requires good fertility and adequate soil moisture to size up properly.

Stores for 8 to 12 months.
