winter-triticale
Winter Triticale

Winter Triticale is a vigorous, cool-season cereal that is a cross between wheat and rye. This unique combination creates an outstanding choice combining the cold hardiness and allelopathic effect of rye with the nutritious grain quality of wheat.

It can be planted as a cover crop, grown as an alternative to wheat grass or harvested as grain for food.

Planted in late summer or fall, the plants quickly form a vegetative cover going into winter and then resume vigorous growth in spring. This is similar to Fall Rye, but the roots are not as vigorous, making vegetation management more manageable when mowing or tilling.

When used as a cover crop, it is easiest to terminate when plants are still young, before the crop starts to produce heads. Winter Triticale tends to head out later than Fall Rye in spring, allowing more time for spring growth before needing to till or mow. Plants can be tilled once they reach 12" to 16", just before they form heads.

If planted in spring or early summer, Winter Triticale can be used as a ground cover that stays low in height. Since it is a winter-annual (requires vernalization from cold exposure) the plants won't produce seed heads until they have gone through winter. This means it can be used in pathways, wheel tracks or planting beds where it will suppress weeds and won't require mowing during the first growing season.

Note that if Fall Rye is planted very early in spring and temperatures are extremely cold, the plants may still vernalize and produce seed heads. If this is not desired, it is important to delay seeding until temperatures warm.

Winter Triticale can be planted alone, but works well in cover crop mixes with peas, vetch, clover or tilling radishes. Reduce the seeding rate to 50% when combined with other crops.

Untreated, Non-GEO Seed

250g covers approximately 250 sq. ft
1 kg covers approximately 1000 sq. ft
